STUDIO JESS

STUDIO JESS offers a curated selection of poster art, paintings, and printed textiles, all produced in “small batch” to ensure that each piece remains unique. The posters, crafted in-house, are printed on high-quality art paper and personally signed by the artist. The textile production is made-to-order, sustainable and water-free in Sweden

The Artist Behind Studio Jess

I am Eva Szegedi Jess and I work from my studio in Gothenburg.

Significant for my work is the profound need to simplify and reduce until just the necessary is left on the canvas. “How far can I go and how much can I leave out?” are constant questions I ask myself.

I am constantly looking for the colours that speaks and interfere with each other and creates the most interesting relationship. Colours are my main focus and are often muted but then combined with a sparking colour that sometimes just have to be there.

My process always begins with countless small, stamp-sized line sketches where my hand guides the way without much thinking. I select a sketch that compels me to delve deeper, translating it to canvas, collage, or most frequently, digital art.

“How far can I go and how much can I leave out.”

Is there a theme behind it all?

There is an obscure and hidden journey behind each piece, through forms and colors where strength and weakness play vital roles, teaching us to accept and nurture our differences. These ongoing thoughts guide me as I blend shapes, line drawings, and color

Coffe and colours what else do you need?

“If Vincent was alive I would have been his stalker.”

What are your biggest inspiration sources

Artists who inspire me are Elsworth Kelly for the simplicity of shapes and absolute nerve in his drawings. Agnes Martin for just daring to do her thing and the sensitivity to making repetitive order beautiful and Van Gogh for his unbelievable colour sense and his lovely sayings and poetry. If Vincent was alive I would have been his stalker.

Background

I graduated in Graphic Design from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design and have since worked between art and design. I love the printing process, and if I hadn't become a designer or artist, I'd have spent my time behind the printing press, ideally next to a coffee brewery, of course.
